The journalism education at Guizhou University began in the 1940s. Renowned journalism educator Liuyi Xie was invited to teach as a professor at the then National Guizhou University, delivering specialized lectures on journalism. In 1986, with approval from the State Education Commission, Guizhou University established the province’s first undergraduate journalism program. In 2006, the Department of Journalism was founded within the School of Humanities, and in 2022, the School of Communication was officially established.

The School of Communication at Guizhou University is jointly built by the Publicity Department of the CPC Guizhou Provincial Committee and Guizhou University. It is a governing member of the Chinese Journalism History Society and serves on the executive committee of the Society's Commission on the History of Journalism and Communication Education. Currently, the school offers two undergraduate programs: Journalism, and Broadcasting and Hosting Arts. The Journalism program has been recognized as a first-class undergraduate major in Guizhou Province. The school is authorized to award master’s degrees in the first-level discipline of Journalism and Communication and in the professional master's degree of Journalism and Communication.

The school employs 28 staff members, including 21 full-time faculty, and enrolls over 360 undergraduate and graduate students. The school has a fully equipped Media Experimental Teaching Center, which includes several platforms such as an All-Media Broadcasting Center, an Intelligent Communication and Media Integration Innovation Lab, a Digital Audio and Video Lab, and a Convergent Media Editing Lab. It has also established a number of internship and practical training bases in collaboration with central media outlets in Guizhou and major news organizations in the province.

The school offers three provincial-level first-class undergraduate courses, including the offline course “Program Hosting and Research,” the online-offline blended course “Convergent Journalism,” and the online course “News Photography.” Students have achieved excellent results in competitions such as the “Challenge Cup” National Undergraduate Academic Science and Technology Contest and the National College Student Advertising Art Competition, winning eight national awards and over 40 provincial and ministerial awards.

Since 2019, the school has been awarded six National Social Science Fund projects and 15 provincial and ministerial-level projects. It has published 10 monographs and over 40 papers in CSSCI (Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index) journals. The school has received one first prize and one third prize in the Guizhou Provincial Philosophy and Social Sciences Awards, with two achievements receiving commendatory instructions from provincial and ministerial leaders.

Looking forward, the School of Communication at Guizhou University will adhere to Marxist journalism principles, foster virtue through education, uphold the concept of new liberal arts, promote interdisciplinary integration, and strive to cultivate new-era talents in journalism and communication.
